Cora discovers a magical ring in the back of an old piano. This ring allows the thoughts of those around her to enter Cora's mind. However, a majority of these thoughts are melancholic, pessimistic, and bothersome. Cora begins to have a more negative outlook on her life and believes she is surrounded by bad luck. When her father gets a new job, she and her family move from their home in Minnesota to Texas, leaving the ring and piano behind.
